V28-599 : TRUNKING OF A12 TRUNK ROAD

The report of the Corporate Director (Regeneration and Environment) considered a draft detrunking order by the Highways Agency to detrunk the A12 south of Bascule Bridge to the A14 east of Ipswich, as part of the Government's strategic review of the trunk road network.

Suffolk County Council supported the proposals following extensive discussions with the Highways Agency on the terms and conditions of the transfer of responsibility. They believed that there was an opportunity to give higher priority to appropriate investment and development of this route in accordance with local demand. The section of the A12 from the Safeway Roundabout to south of Bascule Bridge came within this Council's Highways Agency area and would be managed by Waveney.

Members generally supported the proposals and welcomed the opportunity for greater control of the detrunked section of the A12, however, there were some concerns that sufficient funding would not be forthcoming for improvements, and that the Government's view that the A12 was not a nationally important route may detriment to the regeneration aims for the area.

RESOLVED

1. That the proposals by the Highways Agency to detrunk the A12 south of Bascule Bridge Lowestoft to the A14 east of Ipswich be supported.

2. That the Highways Agency be advised that this Council would expected to see significant support and investment in the detrunked section of the A12 within the Waveney District.
