V28-513 : W16522/3 - ALFRED CORRY MUSEUM, FERRY ROAD, SOUTHWOLD

Application for extension to existing building to provide workshops, storage and display area.

The report of the Corporate Director (Regeneration and Environment) outlined the planning history to the above Museum which had been given planning consent for location on the Southwold Harbour Car Park in 1997. The present proposal was to extend the building on the seaward side to provide workshop, storage area and lookout in order to separate working functions from the general viewing public.

The applicants stated that it was becoming difficult to proceed with any significant work on the boat without compromising the health and safety of visitors. Two objectors felt the Museum should be moved from this location altogether, and the Town Council felt the extension should be built on the south side where it would be less visually intrusive.

The extension would continue the linear form of the building and maintain the theme of a lifeboat station. The extension reflected the design details on the existing building, and whilst it would have some impact upon the view and outlook of nearby residential properties, this would not be to the degree that would warrant refusal. The Director recommended approval.

RESOLVED

That planning permission be granted to application W16522/3.
