V28-443 : WAVENEY CONTRACT SERVICES - HIGHWAYS SECTION STAFFING
The report of the Corporate Director (Community Services) considered the staffing of the Highways Section of Waveney Contract Services following a thorough review of the workload which identified a significant backlog.
During 1999/2000 the Section employed 20 people on a permanent basis and six from an agency to deal with a peak workload. That peak workload had not diminished and had continued into 2000/01 as the norm. The Section continued to employ 20 people on Highway work topped up with three agency employees. The net shortfall in staffing between the two years stood at three.
Ideas to improve the organisation of work to help claw back some of the backlog would be implemented, but on its own this would take a long time. It was proposed that the three agency people be offered a temporary contract until 31 March 2001 and an additional four people be employed on a temporary basis until 31 March 2001 with the workload being regularly monitored and adjustments made if necessary before the end of March. RESOLVED
1. That the three current agency people used in the Highways Section be offered temporary contracts of employment until 31 March 2001.
2. That an additional four people be employed on temporary contracts until 31 March 2001.
