V28-369 : COAST PROTECTION AT CORTON
The report of the Director of Community Services set out the current position in relation to coast protection at Corton, following severe north-easterly gales in November 1999 and April 2000 which resulted in two sea wall collapses.
In accordance with the 1996 Shoreline Management Plan short term holding repairs were proposed within 2000 to be funded from the existing Coast Protection Maintenance budget. It was also proposed that an application be made to MAFF seeking approval and grant aid towards major renewal works over the Corton frontage. If a MAFF grant application was successful, there would be commensurate impact on Council capital programme expenditure.
RESOLVED
1. That applications to MAFF be made to seek technical grant aid approval for major sea wall reconstruction works from 2001/02.
2. That the Council's capital programme includes provision for implementation of sea wall construction at Corton from 2001/02 at an estimated cost of approximately £2m, for which the potential Waveney contribution is approximately £650,000, for which Supplementary Credit Approval would be available if the grant application is successful. 3. That the action of the Director of Community Services in awarding a preliminary assessment of intangible economic benefits contract with Flood Hazard Research Centre at a cost of £3,250, be confirmed.
4. That the potential need to invest over £25,000 in a more detailed study during 2001/02, to be funded from existing revenue budgets, pending approval for retrospective grant aid, be noted.
5. That the action of the Director of Community Services in negotiating with two tenderers for seawall repairs at Corton, and the award of the tender to J. Breheny Contractors be confirmed.
