V28-346 : ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT UNIT - CLIENT/ENQUIRY ANALYSIS

The report of the Corporate Director (Regeneration and Environment) had been requested by members to inform them of the demand for the Economic Development Unit's advice/assistance service during 1999. The report analysed the make-up of approaches by sector, size of firms, origin of enquiry etc, and revealed a continuing growth in the number of business enquiries handled by the Unit.

The vast majority of enquiries came from small businesses, but this situation could change. Two major deficiencies in the service were noted, one of which was company aftercare, where resources were not available to make follow-up visits to every company contacting the Unit. Also, regarding the tracking of enquiries, at present only those which received grant aid were followed through.

RESOLVED

1. That the significance of the change in demand for the Economic Development Unit's advice/assistance service be noted and the measures taken to cope with this be endorsed.

2. That the Council reaffirm its commitment to supporting the starter and small firm sector.

3. That the Panel receive annual reports on the impact of individual schemes run by the Council, to enable them to be reviewed.
