V28-345 : LOCAL ENTERPRISE LEVELS

The report of the Corporate Director (Regeneration and Environment) advised members that of 409 Local Authority District areas covered in a "league table of enterprise" recently unveiled by the Deputy Prime Minister, John Prescott, Waveney was rated 385th. The table was based on the number of businesses per head of population throughout England, Scotland and Wales.

Due to Waveney's low position in the table, members were asked to consider what action could be taken to improve levels of entrepreneurship in the District. The issue could also be raised with the Waveney Task Group of the Suffolk Development Agency.

RESOLVED

1. That the issue of "Entrepreneurship in Waveney" be raised with the new Small Business Service for Suffolk with a view to accessing funding for additional business support initiatives from the Objective 2 programme and the Phoenix Fund.

2. That discussions also be held with the Small Business Service/Lowestoft Enterprise Agency to ascertain the reason for the area's low position in the survey.
