V28-343 : THE PROVISION OF MANAGED WORKSPACES IN WAVENEY
The report of the Corporate Director (Regeneration and Environment) informed members of an approach from Suffolk County Council for the District to become partners in the development of further managed workspace provision in Waveney, and set out a policy by which the projects could be assessed.
Managed workspaces were widely recognised as an essential tool in economic regeneration and there were several sites already operational in Suffolk, including the North East Suffolk Business Centre (NESBC) on the South Lowestoft Industrial Estate.
It was now proposed to develop two acres of the Riverside Road site to provide 38 to 40 units of managed workspace, approximately twice the size of the NESBC. The capital cost of building the new facility would be borne by the East of England Development Agency, with the District and County Councils being responsible for fitting out and running it. A future report would set out the full financial implications of the project.
Concerning Bungay, it was now uncertain whether a site could be found for managed workshop provision, and if no site could be found it would only be right that the £100,000 of Rural SRB funds earmarked for the project be released for projects in other Districts. RESOLVED
1. That the Council agree in principle to work with Suffolk County Council to develop further workspace provision in Lowestoft and Bungay, subject to site availability, with funding from the Employment Generation Fund.
2. That a further report be brought to the Panel setting out the detailed funding package/management agreement needed to implement these schemes, and assessing them against a policy framework.
