V28-313 : W594 - ELLOUGH AIRFIELD - PROPOSED USE BY POLICE HELICOPTERS
The report of the Corporate Director (Regeneration and Environment) set out a request from Suffolk Police to operate helicopters from the above site. The proposed use would involve a single Air Support Unit helicopter, based at Wattisham but from time to time pre-positioned at Ellough to reduce police reaction time in the north of the county. It was difficult to predict the expected level of use, however the Senior Pilot did not initially anticipate night sorties more frequently than once every two months on average.
The log book for the airfield revealed that the current level of flight activity was far below the permitted maximum. The only significant nuisance, therefore, would be the night flights, and provided that these did not greatly exceed the estimated half dozen nights per year, the proposed use was considered acceptable.
Copies of the Director's report had been sent to the Parish Councils of Ellough, Mutford, Worlingham and North Cove, and both Worlingham and North Cove had replied with no objection and no objection subject to no training flights respectively. RESOLVED
That the Section 106 Agreement relating to flight activities at Ellough Airfield be varied to permit movements by a police helicopter at any time, including Sundays and during the night.
The meeting was concluded at 10.15pm.
