V28-274 : W402/19 - WANGFORD COMMON COVERT, HILL ROAD, WANGFORD

Application for an extension to existing quarry.

The report of the Head of Planning advised that the applicants currently extracted sand and gravel from the existing Wangford Quarry located to the south of Wangford village just to the east of the A12. Extraction had taken place since 1970, and reserves within the existing quarry would be exhausted within two years. In order to maintain a supply of aggregates the company was seeking permission to extend into an adjacent area of land which was identified in the Suffolk Minerals Local Plan as an area from which mineral should be extracted. The Parish Council recommended refusal due to continuation of noise, smell and air pollution, disturbance of wildlife site and risk of leachate migration and gas escape.

The application stated that there would be no increase in the intensity of the activity at the site, and rates of output and traffic movements would remain the same. There were, however, a number of areas in the proposal that required clarification. The limits to the extraction area were not clearly identified, and it was not clear what trees were to be removed or retained. There were also other matters which needed attention, and the Head of Planning recommended approval subject to those matters being addressed.

RESOLVED

That Suffolk County Council be informed that this Council raises no objection to the grant of planning permission to application W402/19. subject to address of the comments contained in the report of the Head of Planning.
