Development Control - 19/07/00

V28-249 : W3773/9 - 63-65 LONDON ROAD SOUTH, LOWESTOFT

Application for erection of canopy to front elevation.

The report of the Head of Planning concerned a proposal to provide a canopy on the street frontage of the above family entertainment centre. The area beneath the canopy was to be partially enclosed with coloured plastic blocks. The canopy would extend some three metres forward of the existing building line. The applicant also proposed to place bollards on the frontage preventing any parking in this location, as required by the original permission for the premises.

In planning terms the proposed standard vinyl canopy did not reflect the geometry of the existing building and the plastic blocks would look gaudy and out of place on this frontage. Although some form of enclosure at the front of these premises may be acceptable, the current scheme was considered out of character and the Head of Planning recommended refusal.

Before commencement of the debate Councillor Baxter declared receipt of letters from and conversations with the applicant.

Members concurred with the Head of Planning's views, and wished to delegate authority to him to agree an amended scheme.

RESOLVED

That planning permission be refused to application W3773/9, and that the Head of Planning be given delegated authority to approve a scheme more conducive to the surrounding area.
