V28-24 : NEW ASSISTED AREA MAP PROPOSALS
The report of the Chief Executive set out the proposed changes to the UK map for Assisted Area Status, which was expected to be approved in late June 2000. This had arisen as a result of negotiations between the Government and the European commission. A benefit of these changes to the criteria of the map had seen Carlton Colville Ward now included as part of the Lowestoft Assisted Area. As the document required a response by 2 May 2000, the Chief Executive had replied on behalf of the Council.
The Chief Executive highlighted the types of application which were likely to succeed, and these would be judged on their merits by the Department of Trade and Industry. The Enterprise Agency had informed the Council of a high level of interest already, with several local firms actively pursuing interest.
The Chairman felt this was an issue that could be got off the ground before the arrival of the Corporate Director, and reminded members that a detailed presentation would to be made at a future meeting on action that the Panel could be pursuing.
RECOMMENDED
1. That the Chief Executive's response to the consultation document on the new Assisted Area map be endorsed.
2. That Waveney's inclusion on the new Assisted Area map be welcomed, and that a detailed presentation on the benefits of designation be made when the decision is confirmed.
