V28-157 : A/W881 - ELECTRIC PICTURE PALACE, BLACKMILL ROAD, SOUTHWOLD
Application for illuminated and non-illuminated signs.
The report of the Head of Planning advised that seven letters of objection had been received to the above application, stating that the signage was excessive, illuminated signs were not suitable, advertising contradicted the members only status of the cinema, and the signage was inappropriate in the Conservation Area.
Change of use of the building to a cinema was approved earlier in the year. Whilst it was appreciated that signage could add to the overall ambience of the building, the number proposed was excessive and would neither enhance the building nor the conservation area, particularly the signs on the roof and side elevation. On the front elevation the individual Drama and Romance and Electric Palace signs would have a certain charm, and the tower with painted glass with a single bulb would not be excessive, provided it was only illuminated during opening hours. The Head of Planning recommended refusal, but suggested that he be given delegated authority to approve an application as outlined above. RESOLVED
That planning permission be refused to application A/W881, but that the Head of Planning be given delegated authority to grant planning permission to an amended application for the individual Drama and Romance and Electric Palace signs, and painted glass tower lit by a single bulb, to be lit only between 6pm and 10.30pm.
