V28-129 : QUESTIONS
Councillor Chilvers submitted the following Question in accordance with Standing Order 7(4):
(a) "What are the number of Asylum Seekers currently resident in the Waveney District? (b) What is the total cost to Waveney District Council of providing support to Asylum Seekers in the district?
(c) What financial support does the Waveney District Council receive from Central Government?
(d) What additional number of Asylum Seekers can Waveney District Council expect to receive over the next 12 months?
(e) Are there any provisions made in the current budget to cope with the likely financial burden on the District Council Tax payer for Asylum Seekers?"
The Chairman of the Council gave the following reply:
(a) "The number of Asylum Seekers resident in Waveney is not known. There are no Asylum Seekers housed in either Council or Housing Association tenancies. (b) There is no cost to the Council for supporting Asylum Seekers.
(c) The Council has not received any financial support from Central Government, as it has not incurred any expenditure.
(d) It is not possible to estimate the number of Asylum Seekers over the next 12 months. The East of England Consortia is in discussion with the Home Office on behalf of all local authorities in the eastern region. The Chief Executive and other Chief Executives in Suffolk are involved in the Consortia discussions and she will update members as and when there is any significant change in the situation.
(e) There is currently no provision in the budget to deal with Asylum Seekers".
