V27-975 : MUSEUM REGISTRATION
The report of the Honorary Curator updated members on the current position of the application for Museum registration and identified several problems which required attention.
The South East Museums Service (SEMS) required a statement of continuity of support from the Council for a minimum period of five years. The Chief Executive advised that as this was a commitment of forward budget it would be necessary to obtain formal approval from the Council's Community Services Committee, and a report would be prepared for the next meeting.
SEMS also required an acceptable form of Loan Agreement for the Council's loan items. There appeared to be some confusion as to whether certain items were owned by the Council or the Lowestoft Charter Trustees, and it was necessary to clarify this position before an Agreement could be prepared. Once ownership of the items had been established the Council would give the preparation of the Agreement a high priority. Finally, SEMS required an official appointee from the Council for the Lowestoft Porcelain collection, and the Trustees had proposed Mr J. Johnstone. The Chief Executive considered that the exact role of the appointee needed to be established to avoid any conflicts of interest, and any such appointment would need to be made by the Community Service Committee. This could be included in the aforementioned report.
Assurances had been made by SEMS and Suffolk Museums that the Museum's original provisional registration would not be rescinded as long as the museum itself did all it could to meet their requirements.
RESOLVED
