V27-944 : COMMUNICATIONS - CHIEF EXECUTIVE

(a) National Licensing Scheme for Private Sector Landlords

The Chief Executive reported that he had received a letter from Gateshead Metropolitan Borough Council for support and assistance with a campaign for the introduction of a national licensing scheme for private sector landlords. The campaign was closely aligned to the package of measures the Government was currently putting together to improve the quality of life for residents who lived in areas of poor housing or whose lives were being made a misery by the anti-social behaviour of their neighbours.

The Chief Executive sought Councillors' agreement for him to write to Gateshead with an indication of this Council's support for such a scheme. It was also intended that a report be submitted to the Housing Sub-Committee on 4 January 2000 for them to discuss the issue in detail.

Members indicated their agreement for the Chief Executive's proposal to send a letter of support to Gateshead MBC.

(Councillors Francis and Shepherd declared an interest in the above item and left the room during the debate).
