Application for construction of replacement bingo club.

The report of the Director of Planning and Building Control outlined the replacement design for a bingo club using the same footprint as the previous building, extending the whole span of the site. He felt the innovative design concept of the new building would be acceptable, introducing a modern facade into Battery Green Road.

Following discussions the applicant's architect had agreed to vary the height of part of the roof line, details of the canopy and entrance fenestration were explained. The Director felt that a lift should also be included to allow access to all floors, including the welcomed viewing balcony. The Director recommended that he be given delegated authority to approve the application subject to receiving suitably revised drawings.

Members were divided in their opinions on the architectural merit of the new scheme, given the existing Victorian buildings at each end of the site. The Director felt that in view of the Ice Factory and other fishing related buildings on the opposite side of the road the design, with minor adjustments, could prove surprisingly acceptable. The frontage of the site being curved lent itself to the building in units as proposed.

RESOLVED

That the Director of Planning and Building Control be given delegated authority to grant planning permission to application W1315/1, subject to receipt of suitably revised drawings.
