V27-369 : RECRUITMENT OF APPRENTICES

The report of the Director of Waveney Contract Services explained the need to reintroduce an apprentice scheme into the Building Section to overcome the difficulty of finding quality tradespeople.

It was proposed to take on two carpenters, two bricklayers and two painter/decorators from September this year, and they would be recruited through Lowestoft College either as first year NVQ students or directly from school. They would serve a three year apprenticeship through block and day release at Lowestoft College and would qualify to NVQ 3 standard under the Modern Apprenticeship Scheme.

The costs mainly related to wages which increased each year, and the 1999/2000 costs of £12,000 had been included in the contract price for Programmed Maintenance for the year.

RESOLVED

That six apprentices be recruited as outlined in the report of the Director of Waveney Contract Services from September 1999.
