V27-356 : CHARGING FOR INSPECTION AND HYGIENE MONITORING OF FISHERY PRODUCTS

The report of the Director of Housing and Environmental Services considered the introduction of a European Commission decision for local authorities to charge for inspection and hygiene monitoring of Fishery Products from 1 July 1999, and also set out the charges to be levied locally.

In order to minimise any administrative burden to the local industry, it was suggested that a single accounting period of twelve months, which was the longest allowed under the regulations, be put into place, except where businesses preferred a shorter period.

The cost of providing this service under the new regime would increase to £14,692, an increase of £5,434. It was anticipated that the charges recovered would be in the region of £3,400 per annum, a deficit of some £2,000.

RESOLVED

1. That the longest accounting period possible of one year for the charging of inspection and hygiene monitoring of Fishery Products be set by the Council, except where businesses prefer it to be shorter.

2. That the Food and Safety Section continue to work closely with the fishery industry to advise on proper Food Safety Management Systems.
