V27-257 : BEACON MILLENNIUM GRANTS
The report of the Director of Community Services concerned a National project to provide 2,800 beacons to be lit from sunset on 31 December 1999 across the country. The organiser had suggested that as Britain's Most Easterly Point, a particular effort could be made locally to have a number of beacons in towns and local communities. It was considered that the Council could encourage participation in this project by offering a grant towards the estimated cost of purchasing a Beacon. Research on the level of interest and cost would be undertaken and the details reported to the next meeting of the Community Services Committee.
RECOMMENDED
1. That an approach be made to Town and Parish Councils seeking their views on participating in the Beacon Millennium project.
2. That a report on the findings and costs associated with promoting Millennium Beacons be made to the next meeting of the Community Services Committee.
