Council Minutes System

Development Control - 15/03/00

V27-1367 : W17470 - LAND AT GUN HILL, SOUTHWOLD

Application for erection of beacon.

The report of the Director of Planning and Building Control reminded members that the above application had been approved at the last meeting of the Committee, but advised that following this decision a complaint had been received that the Committee were not made aware of additional letters of objection received after the agenda was printed. This was verified by the minutes of the meeting, and therefore the decision notice was not issued. In fact, prior to the Committee additional objections were received, making a total of sixteen in all. The letters reiterated objections already received and did not raise any additional issues, except to state that members were not made aware of the fact that this part of Southwold was within the Conservation Area and an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Since the Committee, further objections had been received from the Suffolk Preservation Society, and their letter was read to members. The Director felt the beacon fitted in well with its surroundings, and recommended approval.

Before commencement of debate, all Councillors declared receipt of lobbying material. Members were divided almost equally in their views, and during the debate made suggestions such as moving the beacon to another site, or the provision of a temporary beacon for Southwold. However, following the defeat of a motion for refusal, an approval motion was successful.

RESOLVED

That planning permission be granted to application W17470.
