V27-1028 : WHERRIES BAR, WHERRY HOTEL, OULTON BROAD
PUBLIC ENTERTAINMENT LICENCE - VARIATION TO HOURS
The report of the Chief Executive outlined an application to vary the hours of the Public Entertainment Licence for the Wherries Bar, Wherry Hotel on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights to a 1.00am finish. The Brown Boat Suite on these premises already had a closing time of 1.00am on these days.
The Director of Housing and Environmental Services, objected due to complaints about entertainment type noise emanating from the Wherry Hotel, especially on Friday and Saturday nights. His Department felt that significantly more problems would arise from an extension.
A letter of representation had been received from the applicant, arguing that it was their management policy to be `good neighbours', and that Oulton Broad was a tourist attraction and later opening hours would be welcomed by visitors. The Police did not object to the application, although they suggested approval be given for six months to enable them to monitor public order.
The local ward member had received complaints regarding noise emanating from the premises, and said the local community viewed this as a problem.
Members felt that, whilst increasing the hours of the bar may not increase noise emanating from the function room, it may increase the level of use of the room. In addition, particularly in the summer months customers in the bar could spill out onto the waterfront entrance to the bar, increasing noise levels. For these reasons, members were minded to refuse the application.
RESOLVED
That the application to vary the hours of the Public Entertainment Licence of the Wherries Bar, Wherry Hotel, Oulton Broad, be refused.
