V26-969 : WOODLAND BURIALS
The report of the Director of Community Services reminded members that the idea of "Woodland" or "Green" Burials was the subject of an earlier report to the Committee when approval was given to a survey of available land within existing cemeteries. The possibility of private land provision was also to be investigated.
Further options were identified since that earlier report, and a visit to two sites in Essex was arranged for 21 October 1998 to allow members to see at first hand what could be achieved in Waveney. By coincidence, a television programme had recently been shown concerning the subject of Woodland burials and in particular the two sites visited. A video of the programme was shown at the meeting.
Officers felt that there was a need for a woodland burial site in Waveney, and in the short term were proposing the use of a small area of land in Kirkley cemetery. Families of the deceased would be able to decide on the type of ceremony, and also plant a tree, shrubs or bulbs. If demand proved high, further land around the cemetery owned by the Council could be used for the purpose.
It was also proposed to work with the Suffolk Wildlife Trust, who owned land in the area, and Woodland Burial Services, to look into providing a greenfield site for woodland burials. RESOLVED
1. That a Woodland Burial Section be created at Kirkley Cemetery in accordance with the recommendations set out in the report of the Director of Community Services. 2. That negotiations be entered into with Woodland Burial Services to provide a green field site for woodland burials
3. That a decision on a Woodland Burial Section at Beccles Cemetery be deferred until the outcome of the above is known.
The meeting was concluded at 9.45 pm.
