Community Services - 30/11/98

V26-959 : FLINT HOUSE, HIGH STREET, LOWESTOFT

The report of the Director of Community Services outlined an opportunity to acquire the above Grade II listed building, which was prominently situated in the conservation area of High Street, Lowestoft, adjacent to Wildes Score, for heritage/arts use. This acquisition could address the imbalance between the performed and visual arts, in line with Regional Arts Board Policy and the Council's own Arts Strategy. There was further potential in the possibility of working closely on a joint proposal with the Lowestoft Civic Society, who managed the Wildes Score School.

As the offer was made recently there had been no time to develop the project, nor to research the availability of external funding to finance it. Members requested that a progress report be brought to the next meeting.

RESOLVED

1. That, subject to the Director of Central Services, in consultation with the Chairman, negotiating suitable terms, a two year lease of Flint House, High Street, Lowestoft, be taken to allow time to develop proposals for a Gallery/Heritage space and to research external funding.

2. That a programme of temporary exhibitions, events and activities be developed.

3. That a progress report be brought to the next meeting of the Committee.
