V26-689 : SOUTH EAST AND ANGLIAN PORTS LOCAL AUTHORITIES GROUP

The report of the Chief Executive and Director of Community Services provided an update on the Council's participation in the South East and Anglian Ports Local Authorities Group (SEAPLAG), which was approved at minute V26-80.

Amongst the objectives of the Group was the need to develop a strategy for port development in the south east including the matter of accessibility. Furthermore, the Group proposed commissioning research to help it fulfil these objectives. The total cost of such a study was estimated at £150k. Taking into account anticipated European Funding, matching funding of £80k would be required from the Group. It was estimated that £2,000 would be needed from each member, together with officer time.

No formal commitment to pay this or any other specific amount was required but the bid document needed to contain letters of intent from the participating authorities as well as trans-national partners in France and Belgium. In order to meet the bid submission date, the organising group from SEAPLAG needed to receive these letters by 7 September 1998.

RECOMMENDED

That a letter of intent be provided to the South East and Anglian Ports Local Authorities Group in respect of a future contribution, not exceeding £2,000, towards the development of a strategy for the South-East and Anglian ports, subject to the proposal attracting european funding.
