V26-679 : ASSISTED AREA REVIEW
The report of the Chief Executive gave an update on the Assisted Area Review The current Assisted Area map expired on the 31 December 1999 and the Government Office for the Eastern Region (GOER) had written to the Council indicating that a review of the map was to commence.
The European Commission (EC) would have a larger role in the definition of future Assisted Areas, and EC states had been instructed to reduce overall coverage. The minimum size of a Geographic Unit would be 100,000 people, and it was proposed that discussions be held with Great Yarmouth Borough Council to assess the merits of a joint case to meet the threshold. There would also be great merit in making a joint submission with the County Council under the Lowestoft Partnership.
RECOMMENDED
1. That the Council prepares with Suffolk County Council a case for Assisted Area designation for the Lowestoft Area, defined by relevant wards to be decided. 2. That the two authorities hold discussions with Great Yarmouth Borough Council about the value of a joint case for the Lowestoft/Great Yarmouth sub-region.
