Taxi Licencing Panel - 02/04/98

V26-64 : "NO SMOKING" SIGNS

The report of the Chief Executive concerned comments from the taxi trade that the current "no smoking" signs issued by the Council were of such a size that advertisers were restricted to using only part of the rear doors on vehicles.

A new "no smoking" sticker had been designed, and a copy was circulated at the meeting. The new sticker would be placed on the rear side window, visible from the inside and outside of the vehicle, and was more like the recognised "no smoking" sign seen elsewhere.

Members expressed a concern that in many cases vehicles display a "no smoking" sign but the driver smoked. The present condition allowed the passengers to ask the driver to stop smoking. The members therefore asked the Chief Executive to bring a report to a future meeting of the Panel to propose a smoking ban in taxis and private hire cars. The Chief Executive suggested consulting the Trade to obtain their opinion.

RESOLVED

1. That the new sign indicating no smoking in taxis and private hire vehicles be approved.

2. That the new stickers be fitted to the top rear part of the rear doors on taxis and private hire vehicles, and a condition be made to this effect.

* Policy Decision

3. That the opinion of the Taxi and Private Hire Trade be sought concerning the possibility of introducing a smoking ban in taxis and private hire cars licensed by this Authority and the Chief Executive report the results of his findings to a future meeting of this Panel.

The Meeting was concluded at 5.40 pm
