V26-536 : APPLICATION TO VARY PUBLIC ENTERTAINMENT LICENCE

THE BRIDGE HOUSE, ROYAL PLAIN, LOWESTOFT

The report of the Chief Executive concerned an application from the proprietor of the Bridge House seeking an extension of the permitted hours on his Entertainment Licence until 2am. The proprietor had written in support of the application, however an objection had been received from the Police over possible problems of public disorder outside the Bridge House and disturbance in residential streets as customers made their way home.

No recommendation was made to the Panel but the Chief Executive felt the matter to be one of principle rather than one of applying different closing times to individual premises.

The Panel felt that whatever time premises closed, customers would still be in the vicinity for at least half an hour past this time. Nearby towns may have closing times of 2, 3 or 4am, but if Lowestoft premises put on quality entertainment they would attract customers. Members also felt that if they were to approve this application it could be followed by several similar applications elsewhere in the town which would be difficult to refuse.

Members felt that the applicant had argued his case well, however they wanted the opportunity to discuss the matter with other Councillors rather than refuse the application at this stage, and were therefore minded to defer consideration of the application pending further information

RESOLVED

That consideration of the application of the Bridge House, Royal Plain, Lowestoft, to vary its Public Entertainment Licence be deferred for a period of three months for further consultation and information to be provided.

The meeting was concluded at 6.00pm.
