V26-509 : COAST PROTECTION CAPITAL PROGRAMME

The report of the Director of Community Services advised that the Council's Coast Protection Capital programme had been amended as a result of Shoreline Management Planning and implementation appraisals completed to date.

This had resulted in Forward Planning Scheme Applications being presented to the Ministry of Agriculture Fisheries and Food (MAFF), who had confirmed preliminary markers in their Forward Capital Programme to 2002, for four schemes, including Easton Broad to Thorpeness, Corton Village frontage and Southwold Town/Harbour frontage.

All of the above were subject to detailed scheme approval by MAFF including assessment under a prioritisation procedure, the qualifying threshold for which changed annually. There was therefore no certainty as to when or if schemes would receive approval.

In addition to the above proposals the Council was leading a MAFF approved study involving research into sediment transport over the southern north sea area which was planned for completion by April 2001. An application to increase the value of this study from £325k to £576k was soon to be submitted to MAFF for approval. This study was the only ongoing capital scheme.

RESOLVED

That the amendments to the Coast Protection capital programme outlined in the report of the Director of Community Services, to end of year 2001/2002, be noted.
