V26-507 : GREAT EASTERN LINEAR PARK
The report of the Director of Community Services reminded members that the cycle track along the disused Great Eastern Railway line from North Quay Retail Park to Marham Road was completed in August 1998. The report outlined the proposals for continuing the cycle route from Marham Road to Yarmouth Road.
It was proposed that this second section be developed as a linear park, with the path wending its way through the established vegetation, and that Suffolk Wildlife Trust be consulted during the design of the park, with a view to them being involved in developing a long term management strategy. Adjacent land owned by the Council could be excavated to provide a natural fill material to raise ground levels where required. The Director advised that there were many technical and legal matters to be sorted out, but that full consultation would follow these.
A preliminary estimate indicated that the scheme would cost in the region of £200,000. Opportunities to obtain funding from English Partnerships, the Lottery Sports Fund and Objective 5b would be pursued. It was anticipated that construction would commence in Autumn 1999, with planting being carried out in Autumn/Winter 2000.
RESOLVED

2. That the agreement of other Committees be sought to enable adjacent Council-owned land to be included in the park.
3. That a detailed planning application for the project be made.
4. That complementary funding be sought for the project.
5. That conservation organisations and educational establishments be invited to be involved in the design and long term management of the Park.
