V26-494 : DAVID SMITH PAINTING
The report of the Director of Community Services advised that the Council was currently promoting an exhibition of the works of Lowestoft born artist David Smith RE. Mr Smith was an artist of some renown who had achieved both artistic and commercial success. He felt a great affection for the town of Lowestoft and in particular for the way in which he was encouraged and supported by local people in his formative years.
The exhibition offered an opportunity to acquire one of his major works for a negotiated sum of £1,000 rather than the normal price of £3,000. The piece entitled `Lowestoft Old Extension and Pier Head II' was an excellent example of the David Smith style and featured a well known part of the old waterfront. It was intended that once part of the Waveney Collection, arrangements would be made to exhibit it in prominent locations throughout the town.
The Trustees spoke of the success of the art exhibitions held by the Council several years ago, and asked the Chief Executive to examine the possibility of holding a further exhibition in the future.
RESOLVED
That the painting `Lowestoft Old Extension and Pier Head II' by David Smith RE be purchased at a cost of £1,000, to be met from the Paintings and Porcelain Fund.
