V26-489 : COMMUNICATIONS

(a) Army Awareness Day

The Chief Executive, on behalf of Councillor Taylor, reported that Councillor Taylor had represented the Chairman at a function on 19 June 1998 in Bury St. Edmunds relating to the Army Awareness Day. He had been presented with a Anglia recruiting video and this was available from the Chief Executive to any members or officers who wished to view it.

(b) Tourism Strategy - Member Consultation

The Chief Executive reminded members that a report on the Council's Tourism Strategy was considered by the Community Services Committee on 2 July 1998. Members were anxious that they had an opportunity to express their views informally and a special meeting had been arranged on 15 September 1998 to examine the proposals in some depth. A questionnaire would be sent to members for completion prior to the meeting to enable issues of interest to be identified for discussion.

(c) Civic Service Collection

The Chairman announced that a sum of £82.60, which represented half of the collection made at the Civic Service, had been donated to the Sudan relief appeal.

(d) Kuk Sool Won UK Championships

The Chairman reported that the Kuk Sool Won UK Championships had recently taken place. The Lowestoft team was placed second nationally, and a prize giving ceremony was held at the Waveney Sports Centre. The Chairman had been presented with a framed photograph commemorating their achievements in recognition of the Council's support.

(e) Captain Omar Bilal, Royal Jordanian Falcons

The Chairman informed members that he had yesterday attended the unveiling of a wooden seat on the Esplanade dedicated to the memory of Captain Omar Bilal of the Royal Jordanian Falcons, who had died at an airshow in Belgium just two days after appearing in last year's Lowestoft airshow.

The Jordanian military attach‚ attended the event, and presented the Chairman with three plaques in appreciation of the tribute to Captain Bilal and the role the Council had in organising the airshow. The plaques showed a map of Jordan, a scene from Petra, and the Falcons insignia.

(f) Lowestoft Seafront Airshow

The Chairman spoke of the success of today's Airshow and the tremendous enjoyment given to so many people. The organisation and arrangements were excellent and he recognised the dedication of staff and officers involved in the event and gave thanks on behalf of all members. The Chief Executive appreciated members comments and would pass these on to staff.
