V26-479 : SUFFOLK LOCAL GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION

The report of the Chief Executive summarised some major issues which were considered at the recent Suffolk Local Government Association (SLGA) meeting.

The Executive Committee of the Eastern Region Local Government Conference had drawn up a constitution for the Regional Chamber. A consultation paper setting out the proposed constitution was accepted by the SLGA in general terms, and it was anticipated that the Chamber would be formally set up later this year.

The Suffolk Chief Executives Group (SCEG) had drawn up proposals for the Suffolk Development Agency and this had been supported by the SLGA. There were some minor issues which needed resolving including how the political balances could be achieved for the member representation.

A Suffolk Community Governence Group, comprising members from each Council, had been established to direct the Suffolk Lead Officers' Group, which undertook to ensure that Countys and Districts worked closer together to ensure as far as possible services were "seamless".

In April 1998 the Government set out their proposals for "The New Commitment to Regeneration". Suffolk's initial submission was agreed by the Chief Executives to ensure that their bid could be endorsed. A Group of officers under SCEG would be set up to ensure progress was made on achieving the necessary benefits and implementation of this.

RESOLVED

That the report of the Chief Executive be received.
