V26-4 : ELECTION OF CHAIRMAN
Councillor Bostock proposed the nomination of Councillor Devereux, which was duly seconded. On being put, it was
RESOLVED
That Councillor Devereux be elected Chairman of Waveney District Council to hold office until the Annual Meeting in 1999.
Councillor Devereux made a Declaration of Acceptance of Office as Chairman. Councillor Devereux expressed the honour he felt in being elected Chairman of the Council. He thanked the Council for having elected him Chairman for the forthcoming year. He promised to carry out his duties to the best of his ability. In accepting the Chairmanship he highlighted the main characteristics of Waveney which was made up of five distinctively different towns linked by an extensive rural area. He felt it important that the Council concentrated on drawing together the various elements of the District contained within the towns and rural areas and built on the interdependence these areas had with each other with an emphasis of participation towards a more successful future. He highlighted the fact that the candidates for Chairman and Vice-Chairman for this Council reflected the rural and urban mix of the District.
Councillor Devereux emphasised the hardwork of Mrs Turrell the former Chairman particularly the number of engagements she undertook during her term of office but importantly the emphasis she gave on visiting as many Parish Council meetings as was practicable. He felt that Mrs Turrell's work would be hard to follow but he hoped he would follow in the example she had set in visiting as many parts of the District as possible. Reflecting back to the recent local election campaign he hoped that door manufacturers would be able to invent a letterbox which was more suited to politicians canvassing. However, it became clear when talking to people that an important issue was single people living alone and the fear they have of their own personal security and the perceived increase in burglaries. He also felt canvassing gave the opportunity for people to air issues which were important to them and these were many. In concluding he said that there was a large number of Waveney people who have a high regard for the work done by the District Council and an understanding of the constraints the Council worked under. This clearly reflected the dedication and good work of the officers of this Authority. Councillor Devereux looked forward to a busy year and thanked Councillors for the trust they had placed in him and the privilege he felt in serving the Council as its Chairman.
