Planning and Transportation - 30/06/98

V26-336 : OULTON STREET

The report of the Director of Community Services gave details of a Public Meeting called by Oulton Parish Council following a serious accident on 29 May 1998, when a lorry hit two houses in Oulton Street.

The Director explained that upon completion of the Northern Spine Road in Spring 1999, the road would form the main route for HGVs and measures could then be considered for discouraging their use of the A1117.

The meeting understood and welcomed the position but wanted immediate action. The Government Office had agreed to a speed roundel at the Parkhill entrance to the village, which would be completed by the end of June 1998, along with Kill your Speed signs. Another measure being investigated was the repositioning of lamp columns to ease the situation on the narrow footpaths.

A further meeting of District and County Council Officers, the Parish Council, GOER, DETR and Bob Blizzard MP had since been held where the measures were supported.

RESOLVED

1. That the action of the Director of Community Services, in consultation with the Chairman, in developing short term measures to enforce the speed limit in Oulton Street be confirmed.

2. That further measures be developed, if necessary, following diversion of HGV traffic onto the completed Northern Spine Road.
