V26-3 : COMMUNICATIONS - RETIRING CHAIRMAN
(a) New Members
The retiring Chairman Mrs Turrell welcomed to the first Council meeting the new Councillors elected at the 7 May elections and all those members who had been re-elected. (b) The Royal Antediluvian Order of the Buffaloes
Mrs Turrell informed Council of a recent function organised by the local Branch of the Royal Antediluvian Order which she had attended together with other local dignitaries at the Waveney Sports Centre. The function had attracted people from all over the Country including many from Germany who had stayed in local Guest Houses and Hotels. Promotional material had been displayed of the area which had received positive feedback from the organisers who had committed to using the Waveney Sports Centre as its designated convention centre for another four meetings within the year. This she felt would be important not only for the Sports Centre but also for Lowestoft as it attracted over 500 delegates each time. The Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes presented the Chairman with a shield in appreciation of her attendance and the welcome their organisation had received in Lowestoft.
(c) Albert Long
The Chairman announced the death of Honorary Alderman Albert Long. The Chairman paid tribute to Albert Long and informed members that he had joined the former Lowestoft Borough Council in June 1967 and she had recently hosted a function in the Chairman's room to celebrate Albert's 90th Birthday. It so happened it coincided with a visit of Albert's son from Australia. She informed members that his cremation would be held on the 20 May at 2.30pm. Members stood in silent tribute to remember Albert Long Honorary Alderman.
