V26-295 : REVIEW OF TRAVEL TO WORK AREAS
The report of the Chief Executive outlined the decision of the Government's Office of National Statistics (ONS) to merge the Lowestoft Travel to Work Area with that of Beccles and Halesworth.
After intensive lobbying, the decision was to be seen as disappointing, especially as at the time, ONS had stated that the case for Lowestoft to stand alone was well made. There seemed little chance now that the decision could be reversed until after the next National Census in 2001, but Waveney's MP Mr. Blizzard was continuing to take up the issue. One impact of the merger however, would be to disguise Lowestoft in the national unemployment "league". A report on the impact of the change would be presented at the next meeting.
RESOLVED
That the report on the Review of Travel to Work Areas be received.
