V26-124 : MILLENNIUM HEATING PROJECT

The report of the Director of Housing and Environmental Services provided details for consideration to enable a Millennium Heating Project to be adopted that would ensure that all Council tenants could have a central heating system in their home by December 1999 should they so desire.

The heating programme would be funded from the released capital receipts over 1998/99 and 1999/2000 with a budget of £445,000 and £632,500 respectively.

Members relayed the astonishment of other authorities that Waveney could be in a position to offer this facility and felt once again the Council would be seen as forward looking. The down side was felt to be how much the Gas Company would profit from ensuing connection charges. Members asked it be made clear to the tenants by the Director of Housing and Environmental Services that the availability would lead to increased charges and an annual maintenance charge.

RESOLVED

1. That the programme and budget for 1998/99 be noted and the programme and proposed capital budget for 1999/2000 be approved.

2. That publicity be given to the programme to promote the fact that, providing the tenant wants it, all Council properties will have central heating installed by the time of the millennium.
