V26-1185 : W11971/3 AND /4 - 8 SOUTH GREEN, SOUTHWOLD
Application for erection of rooflight lantern to garden studio and Listed Building Consent for erection of rooflight lantern to garden studio.
The report of the Director of Planning and Building Control concerned a proposal to erect a glazed cone shaped structure with gold ball and finial on top of an existing roofed garden room at the above. The existing height of the garden room was 2.7 metres, and the overall height of the lantern was approximately 5 metres including gold ball and finial. The Town Council recommended refusal as being out of keeping with the Conservation Area, and seven objections had been received for this reason, together with the loss of amenity and glare and dazzle aggravating neighbours.
The Director felt that, although imaginative and attractive, the proposal would be too high in this intensively built-up part of Southwold, and would be very conspicuous from many surrounding houses, particularly when illuminated. The Director had subsequently negotiated an amended scheme with a much lower lantern, but the objection of the Town Council was maintained.
Members were divided in their opinions of the merits of the scheme, but the revised much lower lantern was felt to be far more appropriate than the original application. RESOLVED
That planning permission and Listed Building Consent be granted to amended applications W11971/3 and W11971/4 respectively.
