V26-1184 : W10522/4 - 69 HIGH STREET, SOUTHWOLD
Application for change of use to offices and tourist information centre. The report of the Director of Planning and Building Control outlined the Town Council's concern that one of the most attractive shops in the town was proposed to become an office. They felt it was vital to maintain a variety of shops in Southwold, and referred to the Draft 1983 South East Waveney Plan which stated that a dominant shopping element should be retained in the High Street.
The property was currently empty and undergoing refurbishment. The Tourist Offices were currently located in the Town Hall building, and the English Tourist Board had stated that they would refuse accreditation unless higher profile premises were found. The Town Council concerns were superceeded in 1988 by the property's delegation for `professional use' such as an estate agent's. On balance it was therefore felt that the improvements in the facilities offered to visitors to the town would justify the proposal. However, it was important to maintain an interesting window display to ensure the continuation of an interesting frontage to the High Street. The Director recommended approval subject to this window display.
RESOLVED
That for the purposes of paragraph 4(5) of the Town and Country Planning General Regulations 1976 planning permission be granted to application W10522/4, subject to permanent provision of an appropriate window display.
