V26-112 : REVIEW OF BEACH LIFEGUARD SERVICE
The report of the Director of Community Services concerned the Department's review of the Beach Lifeguard Service. In June 1997 the guidelines in the "Safety on British Beaches" were adopted. The main effect of the guidelines increased the minimum staffing level from one to two fully qualified Council employed beach lifeguards at each of the three stations. Voluntary Beach Lifeguards from the Lowestoft Beach Lifeguards Club (LBLC) supplemented the minimum staffing level.
There was a national shortage of qualified beach lifeguards available for summer employment. To overcome this, the Council had formed a partnership with North Norfolk District Council, King's Lynn and West Norfolk Borough Council and Lowestoft College. A national Beach Lifeguard training course was held in mid April in Lowestoft, and the Department hoped that this and a joint advertising campaign would attract potential beach lifeguards.
RESOLVED
That the action of the Director of Community Services, in consultation with the Chairman, in forming a partnership to overcome the shortage of qualified beach lifeguards, be confirmed.
