V26-1113 : PROPOSED CONVERSION OF SHELTER, SOUTHWOLD
Before consideration of the above item, letters of objection and petitions against the proposal were circulated.
The report of the Director of Community Services reminded members that the above item, concerning a proposal to convert a shelter on Southwold Seafront into a quality facility, was considered at the last meeting of the Committee, when it was deferred for a site meeting. The site meeting had since taken place.
Objections received questioned the need for conversion of the shelter, as other facilities were available nearby, and pointed out that there were limited shelters available in the area for use by the public. Members agreed with the points in the objection letters, and added that the shelter should be retained, and indeed renovated.
A letter had been received from the Clerk of Southwold Town Council suggesting improvements which could be made to the shelter, and the possibility that the Town Council would take over its maintenance. Members asked that the Town Council be approached concerning this possibility.
RESOLVED
1. That a proposal for conversion of a shelter on Southwold seafront to a cappuccino and salad bar be refused.
2. That Southwold Town Council be asked whether they would be prepared to take over maintenance of the shelter.
