V26-107 : ESSEX AND SUFFOLK WATER - ABSTRACTION LICENCE

The report of the Director of Community Services informed members that Great Yarmouth Borough Council had written seek support to their opposition to the propoals by Essex and Suffolk Water to increase their licensed rate of water abstraction from the Ely Ouse system at Denver. The Environment Agency had formally advertised its intention to vary the abstraction licence.

Kings Lynn and West Norfolk Borough Council and Norfolk County Council had asked the Secretary of State to hold a Public Inquiry into the proposal. Great Yarmouth Borough Council agreed with this request, in the belief that leakage control, demand management and alternative sources should be pursued instead of the current proposal.

Whilst recognising that the Environment Agency were the water resource managers, members felt it appropriate for the Director of Community Services to write expressing their concern over the licencing proposals, and supporting the requests made by other Councils for a Public Inquiry.

RESOLVED

That the Director of Community Services write to the Environment Agency expressing members' concern over proposals to increase water abstraction from Denver, and supporting requests for a Public Inquiry.
