V26-102 : BURIAL SPACE IN KESSINGLAND
The report of the Director of Community Services examined the Council's policy made at minute V19-251/1 for extending cemeteries in parishes. When the policy was set it referred only to cemeteries and not churchyards, which were the responsibility of the Church Commissioners.
Kessingland Church had recently approached the Council and advised that they had been offered an area of land adjacent to the churchyard, which was rapidly becoming full, which needed to be cleared at an estimated cost of £8,000. The church did not have sufficient funds and asked the Council for assistance.
Members felt that if the Council were to assist in this instance a precedent might be set for the other 47 parishes in the District to follow. They therefore decided that the policy on extending cemeteries should not be extended to cover churchyards.
RESOLVED
That the Council's policy made at minute V19-251/1 for extending cemeteries in parishes be reaffirmed, and not extended to cover churchyards.
