V26-100 : KIRKLEY CEMETERY - REDUNDANT CHAPEL
The report of the Director of Community Services advised that within Kirkley Cemetery there were two chapels which had recently become Grade II Listed Buildings. One of these chapels had fallen into disrepair and the cost of works was estimated at £5,000, which could not be met from the repair and maintenance budget.
In view of this local funeral directors had been consulted to gauge their interest in leasing this chapel to provide an alternative use. They would be responsbile for the satisfactory repair of the building to retain the fabric in a watertight and waterproof condition as part of the lease agreement. A favourable reply had been received from one of the Funeral Directors, who proposed to use the building for funeral services in return for a peppercorn rent.
The alternative course of action would be to carry out minimum repairs on health and safety grounds, such work to funded from the repairs and maintenance budget.
RESOLVED
That a lease agreement be prepared for the Kirkley Chapel to transfer the liability for essential repairs.
