V25-760 : ASSISTED AREA REVIEW

The Chief Executive reported that the Head of Economic Development had written to the Government Office for the Eastern Region (GOER) following rumours circulating to the effect that work on a review of the Assisted Area map of the UK was underway in the regional Government Offices.

GOER's reply made it clear that they had not received any indication when the Assisted Area review was likely to take place nor what the precise criteria for designation would be. Members were made aware that there would be pressure to reduce the number of Assisted Areas at the next review.

It was considered important that the Chief Executive kept in close contact with the GOER officials involved in the review. It was also felt important that the area's MP was kept fully up to date on the possible changes taking places in this field.

RECOMMENDED

That the Council in conjunction with Suffolk County Council through the Lowestoft Partnership brief the area's MP on the need for Lowestoft to attract Assisted Area designation and the process through which this might be achieved.
