V25-759 : REVIEW OF TRAVEL TO WORK AREAS AND SMALL AREA UNEMPLOYED STATISTICS
The Chief Executive reported that the Office for National Statistics (ONS) had undertaken a review of unemployment statistics for both Travel to Work areas (TTWA's) and smaller areas in the UK. The ONS had also revised the TTWA boundaries and welcomed comments. The new proposed boundary covered all of Waveney and some of South Norfolk. This radical change seemed to be out of keeping with local knowledge of the geography of the area and it was felt it could have a major impact on Lowestoft's case for future Assisted Area designation. However, no objection could be sustained on these grounds and unfortunately the Council did not have access to the statistics and logic by which the revised boundaries were devised. RECOMMENDED
That the Council lodge a technical objection to the Travel to Work area boundary changes and ask for evidence to be provided by the Office for National Statistics justifying their plans for change.
