V25-708 : EUROPEAN FUNDING FOR RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES

The Director of Housing and Environmental Services reported that a joint application for funding under the THERMIE programme of the European Commission was made by the Council, the Energy Development Co-operative Ltd., and OY Windside Production Ltd., of Finland for the development of a new gearing system to be used with small vertical axis wind turbines. This Council's contribution had been in kind, by the time of the Environmental Co-ordinator and Administration Staff. One of the perceived uses could be in conjunction with street lighting.

The bid for funding had been successful and the European Commission would make a financial contribution up to approximately £20,500. It was likely that a further call for funding would occur at the end of 1997 under the JOULE programme for the demonstration of projects showing the practical advantages of the development project.

RESOLVED

That the successful bid for funding from the European Commission in respect of renewable energy sources be welcomed and a further bid for a demonstration project be supported, subject to a report detailing this Council's commitment.
