V25-660 : LOWESTOFT SEAFRONT AIRSHOW

The Committee considered the report of the Director of Community Services which reviewed the recent Seafront Airshow held in Lowestoft on 24 July 1997. The event had been a great success, with an estimated 50,000 people attending, and the East Anglian Tourist Board estimated that around £« million had gone into the Lowestoft economy.

However, the Show did suffer a financial deficit of £22,800 mainly through lack of sponsorship and the level of insurance necessary. In order for a future show to take place a major sponsor would be needed and a realistic budget set up based on this year's costs. A survey showed that many people wanted and expected the Show to take place again, and a decision was required at this meeting as to whether or not to proceed.

Members had been saddened at the news of the death of Captain Amr Hani Bilal of Jordan's Royal Falcons Aerobatics Display Team who had been killed at an airshow in Belgium 2 days following the Lowestoft show. Members and officers stood in silent tribute to his memory.

RESOLVED

1. That sponsorship for the 1998 Lowestoft Seafront Airshow be pursued immediately, and members be updated on sponsorship arrangements at the October meeting of the Committee.

2. That provisional enquiries be made regarding a possible date for a 1998 airshow, but that no commitments be made until the result of the sponsorship appeal is reported to the November meeting of the Committee.

3. That Policy and Resources Committee be requested to provide a further supplementary estimate of £15,400 in respect of the remaining costs of the Airshow.
