He informed members that the Government had set up a group headed by John Prescott to pursue Local Government issues with representatives from the Local Government Association.

The Chief Executive urged members to read the extracts he had circulated particularly referring to the new approach on issues such as CCT being replaced by "Best Value". In concluding the Chief Executive emphasised that this years conference was the first conference of the newly formed Single Local Government Association which he felt had been extremely successful and significant for the future.

(b) Lowestoft Seafront Air Show

The Chairman informed Councillors that she had received many telephone calls and letters from all over the country expressing peoples delight at the recently held Lowestoft Seafront Air Show. It was clear that the event put Lowestoft well and truly on the tourist map especially when the middle east broadcasting centre filmed the entire show and beamed pictures back via satellite to over 30 million viewers. The display included the Red Arrows who the Chairman met after the event and received a framed autographed picture of one of the Red Arrows aircraft.

The Chairman wished to pass on the Councillors thanks to the officers involved in organising the event and congratulated them for an extremely successful occasion. The Chairman also thanked the work and help of the emergency services.

It was however with sadness on hearing the news of the disaster at the air show in Belgium which resulted in the death of Captain Amr Hani Bilal of Jordans Royal Falcons Aerobatics Display Team who two days earlier had performed at the Lowestoft Air Show. The Chairman had sent letters of condolence to the family of the airman and the Mayor of Ostend to pass on to the families of those who died as a result of the crash.

Members and Officers stood in silent tribute to their memory.
