V25-552 : THE PAUL EVANS PRIDE IN LOWESTOFT AWARD
Before the formal proceedings of the Council the Chairman announced that she was to carry out the inaugural presentation of a new award presented by Waveney District Council to an individual or group who had done most to reflect credit upon, and publicity for Lowestoft nationally and/or internationally. The Chairman announced that the first recipient of the "Paul Evans Pride in Lowestoft Award" was Paul Evans not only because of his overall athletic achievements but more notably performances at the Olympics, London Marathon and Great North Run but also the great achievement of winning the Chicago Marathon in 1996 and presently holding the British record for running a half-marathon. The Chairman in presenting a silver salver and medallion to Paul acknowledged the support he clearly had from his wife and family who owing to domestic commitments were unable to take part in the ceremony. In receiving the award Paul thanked the Council for the recognition and highlighted how the sport of athletics could be extremely self indulgent which put an enormous demand on his wife and family who he had received full support from. Not only from his family but also people in Lowestoft who at every opportunity give him all the encouragement required. He expressed his pride in receiving the award and also his pride in living in Lowestoft which he had no intention in living anywhere else despite pressures to do so.
